International (esa) Temporal ARray DIStortion / FIeld Generator and Resupply mk. III (a.k.a. TARDIS-FIGR Gateway)
Brief overview
TARDIS-FIGR mk.III in Earth orbit
From the Remote Archival System vaults, retrieved c. AD 5930:
The Temporal Array Distortion / Field Generator Gateway (v3) was completed in 3187 following developments led by the discovery of Temporal Field Influence Chain Molecules ('Timehoppers') beneath the crust of Europa.
When the Planet Earth entered the fourth great Ice Age (3195-3715), large numbers of humans and key species had already retreated to Mars or Near Earth Orbit habitats (NEOs). The Mars colonial objective was compelled to investigate Europa as a key water source, and the erratic failures of these missions led to the discovery of the Timehoppers (THEM).
These microbiological lifeforms, responsible for the red tint in Europa's surface fissures, can survive in any environment where the temperature does not exceed -123C. They have evolved a defence mechanism where they can migrate space/time when threatened, although the motivation for this development was never established. It took a significant effort over almost a century to develop the means to find, contain and harness these organisms. The cryogenic spectral harnessing of mass compounds was key to the establishment of the proposed extrasolar planetary colony alf Cen Bb in Alpha Centauri by means of the TARDIS-FIG experimental gateway.
TARDIS mkI and mkII gates met with various failures and restrictions but did establish the viability of the extrasolar colony. The mk.III was the first model to successfully migrate masses over 100t, with an average temperature above -123C, thereafter designated FIGR to indicate the ability to transport cargo (some records show FIGRS, for 'system').
In 3201 the station was fitted with tools to install portable Timehopper modules, giving the smaller migrating ships the ability to restore the temporal field and return to the origin space/time. In 3213 a companion TARDIS station was completed to facilitate outbound and inbound gates, removing the restrictions the modules had imposed.
The TARDIS stations were reconfigured in 3291 when the Permawave Mass Temporal [Transport System] (PERMAST) was successfully tested, affording the direct migration to Earth circa 3910 when the fourth great ice age had mostly retreated.
Of the humans, around one third elected to return to future Earth, the rest divided between the colonies of Mars and SuperEarth in Alpha Centauri. The reconfigured TARDIS stations were coupled to form the SUPERGATE and remained in service to facilitate transport and trade between the colonies.

Both SUPERGATE and PERMAST were to feature in the history of humans once again in the colonial conflicts early in the 4th millennium, when the timeframes of the two colonies converged with those who jumped to future Earth. By then, Mars had captured and integrated Europa in terraforming the planet, but still required significant resource resupply from Earth. To resolve the conflict, Earth disabled the gate complex as a defence, eradicating their stockpile of Timehoppers. This marked the exit of the mass compounds from terrestrial human history.
The remaining Timehoppers were used by SuperEarth for exploration of their own system, while Mars used theirs to circumvent resource shortages by successfully migrating the majority of the colony back to Earth using the one-way Mars PERMAST-IV several generations before the anticipated onset of the fifth great ice age, the occurrence of which is not recorded.
The fates of humans both in the Milky Way and Alpha Centauri are not known, as broadcasts received by the remote archivists gradually ceased from both sources during the 5th millennium. The quantum scribes ceased operation in AD 5855, the last signal emanating from SuperEarth some four years earlier. Non-linear signals originating from Jupiter, although recorded, indicated by analysis to have no sentient origin, and it was this directive which terminated the record of humans as a species.
